There is an ongoing debate, with no emerging consensus, on the effect that digital devices such as smartphones and tablets have upon children. Childhood is a much studied and important phase of a person’s development, yet the effect of digital devices upon young childhood has, so far, hardly been studied at all. We present a groundbreaking study where we analyse and compare preschoolers from the last third of the twentieth century with a similar modern cohort all against our working hypothesis. In summary, we found our hypothesis partly confirmed. The historical cohort was more developed in their actions of matching the properties of objects to given standards. The modern cohort was more developed in their actions of visual and logical thinking. They also demonstrated a more pronounced general level of mental development. There was no significant difference between the two cohorts in their mastery of modelling perceptual actions. Our results allowed us to make tentative assumptions about the psychological mechanisms that are responsible for these findings. Our surprising results advance the ongoing debate, and pave the way for further research which we identify.
