The purpose of the present study is to generate insight into how children in a group reason with and about semiotic means when collaboratively modeling physics processes. The children are 9 to 10 years old and attend primary school. In a small group, they are faced with two physics problems and asked to discuss these to come up with joint answers. How the children with several semiotic means (physical as well as intellectual tools) take on this challenge is analyzed. The study contributes to and discusses on an empirical basis the tool-mediated (semiotics-means mediated) nature of children’s reasoning and problem solving with implications for understanding children’s learning and development of science knowing.

摘要
