Using Oral Histories to Document Sixty Years of Departmental Change
摘要
This article describes a 2023 sabbatical project that used the oral histories of retired faculty to document and preserve the history of a college mathematics department and the students served by it. These interviews not only tell the individual stories of the faculty—what they taught and how they served the department—but also paint a vivid portrait of the department itself, its role in the college and the changing demographics of the students being served. As this is a project that could be adapted and replicated by a wide variety of academic organizations, the article details the steps required, from locating retired faculty to conducting the interviews to ensuring stable storage of and access to the recordings. It is the author’s hope to inspire others to undertake such projects for their institutions.
