Identity Politics and Regional Dynamics in the Hill States of North India: Decoding Lok Sabha Elections 2024
摘要
This chapter provides an overview of the regional dynamics in the hills States of North India—Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and newly carved Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Drawing on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the study attempts to reflect on the extent to which local concerns, religion, identity and development have influenced the electoral process and outcomes in the States. It argues that apart from geographical contiguity, these States also happen to be part of border regions with their specific developmental concerns. Urban and rural being not clearly separated, habitation here is small and dispersed with a strong biradari, i.e. community connect and these collectively shaped voting preference in the hills.
