Introduction
摘要
The parliamentary election of 2024 was a watershed in the evolution of Indian democracy. Though the NDA coalition emerged victorious with a majority of seats in the Lok Sabha, significantly this election did not lead to single party majority to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Just as remarkably, the election saw a successful manoeuvring of opposition politics, leading to a respectable tally for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a big tent multi-party political alliance of several political parties led by the Indian National Congress. The NDA coalition formed the third successive government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the INC, was elected as the leader of the Opposition. A functional parliament was thus back on track. The introductory chapter offers a resume of the thirteen chapters in this volume, covering India’s North, South, East and Northeast. We argue that the results of this election are a testimony to India’s vibrant democracy that challenges the negative prognosis about its future. The unfolding of the electoral campaign and the results show that while caste as a factor in electoral politics in India has not left the scene of the battle, other factors such as identity—ethnic, religious, region and locality and dalit—have come to the fore. Within the broad contours of this national pattern, the authors demonstrate the complexity of regional electoral arenas as variations on the Indian leitmotiv. Another remarkable fact is the meta-narrative of Hindutva with its varied applications and mutations across India’s regions and localities. In conclusion, we argue that despite the modest mandate for the NDA, the electoral outcome in the 2024 parliamentary elections did not clearly signify a national verdict, and that too, for Hindutva.
