In this chapter, we examine the lived experiences of atypical scholars, that is, academics who occupy non-Western, non-elite, and marginalized positionalities, as they navigate, challenge, and reshape predominantly white, colonial, and patriarchal structures within higher education. Drawing on our commitment to reflexive, intersectional, and relational perspectives on diversity, equity, and inclusion, we bring a critical social science lens to explore how these scholars confront demands for assimilation while retaining and valuing their distinct epistemic standpoints. By examining how atypical scholars redefine the very notions of leadership, mentorship, and scholarly value, this chapter highlights the transformative potential of inclusive practices. Through intersectional, community-centered, and activist approaches, atypical scholars broaden the criteria for academic success beyond the dominant frameworks that have historically benefited only a narrow elite.
