Vitiligo is a common depigmenting disease that occurs secondary to immune-mediated destruction of melanocytes. Childhood vitiligo represents a unique subset of the disease encompassing 20–30% of all patients with this disorder. The mean age of onset in children is 4–10 years. When compared to adults, childhood vitiligo is associated with more progressive disease, a stronger family history, higher frequencies of segmental vitiligo and halo nevi, and superior repigmentation responses.
