Tobacco use in all forms is highly injurious to health, including oral health. It poses a significant global public health problem, one that can be prevented by avoiding all tobacco product use. Traditional cigarettes, cigars, pipes, miniature cigars, waterpipes, bidis and kreteks are some of the commonly used forms of smoked tobacco. Tobacco smoking increases the risk of oral diseases such as oral cancer, oral mucosal lesions, periodontal disease and dental caries, among many other oral diseases and conditions. The dental office is an excellent venue for screening and providing smoking cessation interventions to assist in the management and prevention of tobacco dependence. This chapter provides an overview of the effects of smoked tobacco on oral health and discusses evidence-based cessation strategies at the point of care in the dental office.
