The specifics of marine internal combustion engines (ICEs) pose significant risks to the crew, cargo, and vessel. Malfunctions during voyages, port manoeuvres, or in environmental control areas (ECAs) can lead to violations of emission standards and financial penalties. Classification societies mandate regular monitoring and maintenance of main and auxiliary engines to ensure reliable operation. Shipowners invest in diagnostic systems to maintain engine health, while engine manufacturers equip modern ICEs with self-diagnostic and fault warning systems. Popular portable diagnostic tools like MarPRIME, IMES EPM-XP, DK-20, Premet X, LEMAG ECI, and DEPAS 4.0 Handy measure gas pressure patterns and sometimes include vibration sensors for valve and injection timing. These affordable systems improve engine efficiency but are typically delayed-action, requiring data analysis post-measurement. This limitation prevents realtime adjustments during engine operation. Future diagnostic systems will integrate Industry 4.0 technologies such as cloud computing, digital twins, wireless data transmission, and AI to enable real-time diagnostics, enhancing the scope and accuracy of engine condition monitoring.
