While the concept of energy rentsenergy rents is novel, it has a past that runs throughout the history of political economy, ranging from the very definition of wealth to its apportionment. Over the course of the past two centuries, political economists—moral philosophers—did their best to understand what was natural philosophy, namely the physicsphysics of material processes. As will be shown, some came remarkably close while others failed.
