The early years of space exploration were driven by geopolitical interests, the prevalence of military objectives, and national security reasons, in parallel with scientific goals. During this era, the USA and the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) dominated the field. Today, we are living in an era of space development. Governments’ priorities of defense, exploration, and science continue to be the basis for space programs; however, private corporations are getting more involved, driven by commercial interests. The current space ecosystem offers multiplicity of participants from the public and private sectors and a variety of commercial applications and uses of space technologies and services. Technological advancements have lowered launch costs, making space more accessible. Our lives on Earth rely on space technologies and services. Nations have recognized the value that space brings to societies and its convergence with the sustainability and development goals. Developing economies of non-spacefaring nations should aspire to establish a strong national space sector; their success depends on social, political, technological, and other aspects. To determine if it is a national goal worth pursuing, countries should examine the current space ecosystem and assess their own opportunities and challenges.
