Game-Theoretic Method for Task Allocation in the Drone Fleet

Due to their low cost, micro size, and high maneuverability, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) have increasingly been utilized in various hostile scenarios, including target reconnaissance and surveillance, ground attack, and counter-terrorism operations (Gao et al., 2016). A critical issue in these contexts is the effective use of drone fleet resources and the efficient assignment of targets (Duan et al., 2020). Given the adversarial nature of drone fleets and targets, game theory provides an important theoretical framework to address this problem, helping to optimize task allocation to maximize adversarial outcomes while minimizing losses (Day & Salmon, 2021). In this game-theoretic framework, each drone can be viewed as a participant in the game, selecting its adversarial target and seeking to maximize its utility through collaborative allocation schemes (Hendrickson et al., 2023). The target assignment scheme’s effectiveness and timeliness directly affect the drones’ utility and effectiveness during mission execution. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully consider the target assignment strategy to ensure greater utility than the adversary when employing drones for adversarial tasks.
