This chapter focuses on the patients’ age and marital status, analysing relevant medical discourse and the records of the Eginitio and the Dromokaitio. It highlights the ways in which psychiatric discourse incorporated and maintained socially accepted beliefs and practices about marriage, family life and age (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and old age), and shows how marital status and age, with all their social and cultural connotations, influenced institutionalisation, in conjunction with the capacity and availability of mental health services.
