An algorithm for matching edges in stereo images of an object that is a solid of revolution is described. The scene is illuminated with a bright light to make it easier to distinguish on the image the surfaces and edges that separate them. The algorithm identifies points on the object’s surface that lie on the boundary of dark and light areas and constructs the curves that separate them. The results of applying the algorithm to determine the journal of the gear axle are discussed.
