Community colleges serve arguably the most diverse student populations in the United States and constitute a significant portion of Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). However, the research on Minority-Serving Institutions has not meaningfully considered what it means to a community college with one or multiple MSI designations. This chapter first provides an overview on the multiple missions of community colleges and their diverse student populations. Next, this chapter provides an overview of the research on four types of two-year MSIs: Historically Black Colleges, Tribal Colleges, Hispanic-serving community colleges, and Asian American, Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutions. Then, this chapter considers what the intersections of the research based on community colleges and MSIs offers for understanding Minority-Serving Community Colleges in particular. Finally, this chapter offers recommendations for future research on these institutions.
