Legitimacy in the Mining Sector: Media Narrative Surrounding Social Conflict

More than 3,000 articles from nationalmining sector mediasocial conflict in 2022 were analysed to understand how they shape public opinion on the mining sector. A quantitative approach was used. Relevant topics like water, the environment, development, institutional aspects, and ethics were identified. The established narratives in the national media regarding mining were determined, forming a favourability index. Results reveal media focus on social conflicts, associating the mining sector’s image with these issues. Corporate social responsibility was found ineffective in establishing sector legitimacy nationally. A situational diagnosis was conducted to define favourability indices on mining-related topics in the national media during 2022.
