The Role of AI and IoT in Transforming Modern Agriculture

An in-depth discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in agriculture, and how AI and IoT are disrupting and transforming the agricultural industry and the practices of modern agriculture is explained in this chapter. It begins with an elaborate overview of AI and IoT as research fields, advancements in these sectors, and how they have begun converging in the agricultural industry. It also covers how AI and IoT have transformed precision agriculture, which has greatly enhanced real-time monitoring, data driven-decision-making, and automation features to assist with ongoing tasks such as irrigation, monitoring crop health, and livestock management. AI and IoT have improved efficiencies, increased productivity and sustainability, however there are issues with technical infrastructure, costs, human resources and skills training, and doing business in a trust based age of data. The chapter then gets into some future innovation and apps with focus on how Robotics, Predictive Analytics, and Blockchain add value to any agricultural supply chain. The content of the chapter accumulates with surrounding AI and IoT implications and impacts, and highlights the role of AI or IoT in shaping the future of agriculture, food systems, and design goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
