Costa Rica’s educational system, once a pioneer in Latin America, faces challenges in adapting to the needs of a changing society. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the country’s education system from a legal perspective, including its historical origins, constitutional foundations, organizational structure, and financing. Despite its initial success, the system has experienced stagnation since the 1980s, with difficulties in implementing effective educational reforms.
