Bridging the AI Divide: Approaches to Ensure Equitable Access to Computing and Data

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of modern innovation, capable of transforming sectors from healthcare and agriculture to finance, education, and public governance (Rashid & Kausik, 2024). Its ability to process complex data, predict outcomes, and automate decision-making makes it one of the most powerful technologies of the twenty-first century. However, the benefits of AI are not universally accessible (Goldenthal et al., 2021). A stark and growing AI divide has emerged, marked by severe disparities in access to the computational infrastructure, large-scale datasets, and technical expertise necessary for meaningful AI development (Babina et al., 2024a). This divide not only mirrors existing global inequalities but also has the potential to deepen them further, privileging a small number of regions and institutions while marginalizing the rest.
