The Need for an Infusion of Natural Mentoring into the World of Mentoring Programs
摘要
Natural mentors may play a formal role in the life of a young person (e.g., teacher, coach, extended family relative), but their mentorship is often additive to that role. Their work, as a mentor, involves a special interest in the positive development of the mentee that extends beyond the role expectations. Natural mentors make a personal investment of time and energy to support the development of the mentee, which facilitates establishing trust and likely staying power of the relationship. Evidence suggests that this type of mentoring can lead to positive outcomes for youth, and more intuitively might lead to more endurance of such effects. Given this, one essential future direction to amplify the impacts of formal mentoring program effects would be to deliver skills-based training and support to natural mentors akin to that provided by existing professional mentoring programs.
