This chapter confronts the hard problem of consciousness: how neural processes give rise to subjective experience—the “what is it like” of the vivid taste of lemon or the feeling of the warmth of a sunset. We explore consciousness across multiple dimensions, from creature and state consciousness to the phenomenology of qualitative experience, examining implications for both biological minds and artificial systems. Drawing on compelling animal cognition research, including mirror test studies spanning cleaner fish to elephants, we then trace consciousness across species while investigating swarm intelligence phenomena that challenge traditional notions of individual awareness. Ant colonies and neural networks exhibit sophisticated problem-solving without individual self-consciousness, suggesting intelligence and awareness emerge through fundamentally different pathways. Central to our analysis are David Chalmers’s influential thought experiments on qualia, specifically the fading, absent, and dancing qualia arguments, which probe whether functionally identical systems must share identical conscious experiences. These scenarios force uncomfortable questions: can consciousness vary independently of functional organization? Could artificial systems exhibit computational hallmarks of awareness while remaining experientially vacant? Finally, we examine Bernard Baars’s functional framework for consciousness, mapping its elements onto contemporary AI architectures and revealing both promise and limitations of current approaches. His blueprint spans contextual awareness, adaptation, executive control, and metacognition, each finding parallels in modern machine learning.
