Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) within the petroleum industry often represents a complex logistical challenge. Risks include aspects such as planning, identification, analysis, response planning, and monitoring. The petroleum supply chain involves diverse processes, from sourcing to delivery, with a focus on collaboration due to its segmented nature. Risk factors can be found at different supply chain segments, including source of supply, refinery, distribution, and storage. Internal and external risk factors are identified and addressed through audits, assessing operational breakdowns, personnel changes, cybersecurity, environmental compliance, and external disruptions. Mitigation planning is crucial for successful supply chain execution, including the need for an integrated end-to-end approach. For risk mitigation in the aviation fuel supply chain, it is important to understand the relationship between different supply chain elements and the critical need for risk management. The various modes of shipment (ocean tankers, pipelines, road and rail tankers, drums, and ISO tank containers) each have their own potential issues and mitigation strategies. Quality technical supply chain risks are addressed by adhering to standards, testing, and certification. Competition for raw materials in fuel additives is of importance, as there are challenges and strategies for managing supply chain disruptions. The limited industrial base for specialty fuels and severe weather impacts on fuel additives are also examined, along with the significant threat of cross-contamination. Correct application of these SCRM principles is important for maintaining reliable fuel supply in the aviation industry.
