Footprints Through a Landscape of Mathematical Problems: Edward Silver and His Research on Mathematical Problem Posing
摘要
This chapter surveys the landscape and history of research on mathematical problem posing through the lens of the impact of one of its early pioneers—Edward A. Silver. We trace the roots of research on problem posing back to research on problem solving and examine early efforts to study problem posing itself and to use problem posing as a tool in empirical research in mathematics education. In particular, we consider Silver’s impact in establishing problem posing as an empirical research domain. Additional perspective is provided based on a formal citation analysis of Silver’s influential 1994 article, “On Mathematical Problem Posing.” We conclude by considering where Silver’s work has led present-day research on problem posing and where it may yet point towards directions for future research.
