A Simple Cradle-Wide Sedimentological Model Demystifyies the Complexity of the South-African Paranthropus-Bearing Cave Deposits
摘要
In South AfricaSouth(ern) Africa Paranthropus fossils have been recovered from multiple remnant cave systems (Coopers, DrimolenDrimolen, GondolinGondolin, KromdraaiKromdraai, SterkfonteinSterkfontein and SwartkransSwartkrans) in the Cradle of HumankindCradle of Humankind (Cradle). Paranthropus appears in the fossil record in South AfricaSouth(ern) Africa at ~ 2 Ma and persists through multiple shifts in the local hydroclimate from drier to wetter phases, until around 1 Ma. We review the geology and dating of Paranthropus-bearing sites in the Cradle and outline a simple model of caveDevelopment developmentCavedevelopment and depositional faciesFacies that can be applied, in modified form, at all the southern African cave deposits, thus demystifying their stratigraphyStratigraphy and sedimentologySedimentology. The U-Pb flowstoneFlowstone chronology for these sites, which is analogous to the eastern African tuff-based chronology, should allow for meaningful future comparison between the two regions.
