Religion primarily aims to heal and bring the human soul into salvation. Worldwide, religious institutions transcend the role of salvation by dealing with, among other things, providing medical care and services to communities. In Tanzania, faith-based organizations have been pivotal to the country’s health system and services since colonial times. Available data indicates that they are the largest providers of hospital services and the second largest provider of health services. Recognizing this reality, the government has partnered with faith-based organizations to provide healthcare services. This chapter revisits the role of faith-based organizations in providing health services in Tanzania. Specifically, it examines the extent to which existing institutions are adequate in enhancing the partnership between the government and faith-based organizations in providing health services in Tanzania. While answering this question, the chapter also explores opportunities and challenges that exhibit the partnership between the faith-based organizations and the government.
