African Traditional Religions, Masculinity, and Health
摘要
African traditional religion is inextricably linked to culture and provides the lens through which the people perceive and relate with their immediate and distant environments. It penetrates and shapes every aspect of the life of the people to such an extent that it is difficult, if not impossible, to disentangle it from the Africans’ thought processes and worldviews. The African traditional religious masculinity ideology mediates and shapes health behavior and healthcare utilization among men, all of which have a crucial role in the health and wellness issues facing women. Though the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) espouse inclusiveness and the improvement of quality of life for all, the masculine ideology of maleness expresses exclusive dominance in the gender social relationship that produces adverse health implications. This chapter explores how the norms of masculinity influence behavior that could be inimical to the realization of the health, using selected targets of SDG 3, 5, and 6 as a framework.
