Naïve Classification and the Nature of Vagueness
摘要
Learning theory and predictive processing show that our ordinary philosophical intuitions concerning the epistemic inaccessibility of the cut-off point along a sorites sequence is in some sense false. This fact cannot be accounted for by any widely recognised theory of vagueness to date, as they underestimate the significance of cognitive learning mechanisms and diachronic processes of categorisation. Predictive processing suggest that the brain is highly context-sensitive and operates by the principle of minimising prediction-errors. The theoretical framework of predictive processing allows for a refined contextualist approach that can account for these new findings while also resolving general limitations of contextualism.
