Utopian Creative Writing 2022: Limits Included
摘要
Rooted in the premise that narratives shape the frameworks through which we understand ourselves, our histories and our futures, this chapter presents a critical and creative methodology for employing utopian storytelling to unlock radical possibilities for envisioning alternative futures. It contributes to the expanding field of research emphasizing the importance of cultivating broader “futures literacy” among the citizens. Drawing on analytical tools from eco-narratology, the study examines selected examples from the extensive collection of utopian short stories gathered by the Utopian Stories Project at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2021–2022). This initiative aimed to create an archive of positive future narratives both for scholarly research and as a resource to foster critical creativity and imaginative thinking. The analysis reveals how certain utopias challenge and reconfigure deeply ingrained cultural assumptions about what is considered “natural” or “normal.” In doing so, these stories serve as tools for cultivating critical awareness—even when grounded in creative fantasy and the fantastic.
