Metamorphosis: Transforming Scars into Stories of Triumph
摘要
Beyond the physical and psychological pain of acid attack victimization, the present chapter explores their transformative journey, witnessing the metamorphosis of acid attack survivors from victims to victors. The present chapter explores their trauma of acid attack victimization. However, it does not conceptualize trauma as just a paralyzing force, but also as an event causing post-traumatic growth. While much research has focused on the immediate and long-term negative consequences of such attacks, there is a growing body of literature exploring post-traumatic growth (PTG) among survivors. PTG refers to the positive psychological changes that arise from struggling with highly challenging life circumstances, including enhanced personal strength, deeper interpersonal relationships, a renewed appreciation for life, and shifts in existential perspectives. The chapter examines the narratives of the acid attack victims and traces the trajectory from victimhood to the emergence of strength, resilience, and an unyielding spirit. It explores how they reclaim their identities and transcend adversity. This chapter bears testimony to the extraordinary human capacity for resilience. The present research contributes to the broader discourse on trauma recovery by highlighting that, despite the extreme adversity faced by acid attack survivors, many demonstrate remarkable resilience and transformation. The findings have implications for psychological interventions, policy-making, and support programs aimed at fostering empowerment and well-being among survivors.
