One cannot practice medicine, especially gynaecologic surgery and obstetrics, without some basic knowledge in the legal aspects of medicine. Complications are mandatory, but complications do not mean malpractice. To be able to demonstrate the quality of care, the surgeons need to have traceability of patients’ information, they have to be able to demonstrate the validity of their surgical indication, the quality of the complication management, and if re-operation has been necessary, and that it has been done timely. Attitude towards patients is also important, as many patients are suing doctors for their lack of compassion. However, good professional insurance is critical to help practitioners in case of a claim because the burden of such events is significant for doctors. It is what we call the ‘second victim’ concept, and needs to be addressed specifically.

Attitude towards patients is also important, as many patients are suing doctors for their lack of compassion. However, good professional insurance is critical to help practitioners in case of a claim because the burden of such events is significant for doctors. It is what we call the ‘second victim’ concept, and needs to be addressed specifically.
