This chapter takes a personal approach to ironyirony and black humourblack humour in Ripley by offering first-personfirst-person close readings of two episodes in which TomRipley, Tom commits murders: “SommersoSommerso” and “LucioLucio.” Some viewers have baulked at the tedium of these episodes, but their tediousness is the point. ZaillianZaillian, Steven makes me watch RipleyRipley, Tom workwork to secure my allegianceallegiance with him. Paradoxically, ZaillianZaillian, Steven yokes opposing responses together: amusement and boredomboredom; I am induced to laugh and to yawn at the same time. But all the while, I am unsure whether I should laugh. RipleyRipley, Tom is playing with corpses, after all. But this horrid laughter just makes the humourhumour of these episodes more delicious. In this chapter, I mobilize ideas about comic immoralismstrong comic immoralism to assert that if the jokes were not about murder, they would not be as funny.
