When treating acutely hypoxic patients, the most often prescribed intervention by clinicians is supplemental oxygen treatment. The low-flow nasal cannula (LFNC) is the usual form of this supplemental oxygen. Nevertheless, there are constraints to this supplementary oxygen intervention. A conventional nasal cannula can deliver a maximum of 4–6 L/min of additional oxygen, resulting in an approximate FiO2 range of 0.37–0.45. Above this rate of flow will lead to nasal mucosal irritation with the drying of the passages and increase potential for bleeding with prolonged use. There is a lot of air leaking around the oxygen source in the LFNC because it is an open system. For higher FiO2, the flow rate must be increased. So, the efficacy of treatment for the low-flow nasal cannula is limited. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy is an oxygen supply system that delivers up to 100% heated and humidified oxygen at a flow rate of up to 60 L/min. All settings are controlled independently, for greater oxygen delivery as well as better outcomes.
