General anesthesia that is provided with single-lung mechanical ventilation with the usage of a double-lumen tube remains the standard approach for thoracic surgery. However, this method has been reported to be associated with some adverse effects. The non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgical (NIVATS) technique has been gradually implemented in general thoracic operations. NIVATS has been reported to decrease postoperative complications. It has been well established that NIVATS can reduce the rate of perioperative mortality and postoperative complications and shorten hospital stay. It is also a safe, feasible, and effective approach for many thoracic surgical diseases. However, the long-term benefits of non-intubated VATS remain to be investigated.
