Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established treatment intervention for severe psychiatric diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Parkinson’s disease. The indication of ECT has been broadened since Ceriletti and colleagues introduced it to the clinical settings as the specified treatment intervention for schizophrenia in Italy in 1938 [1]. Recently, more patients with severe depression and other mental diseases have undergone ECT because of its broadened indication and better outcomes. Regarding the characteristics of depressive individuals, previous reports have described a significant positive relationship between depression and obesity as commonly co-occurring medical conditions [2, 3]. Furthermore, the rate of obese individuals worldwide has recently almost tripled compared to 1975 [4]. Specifically, the rate of morbidly obese individuals (BMI >40 kg/m2) among individuals with obesity has been increasing rapidly [5]. That is, the number of morbidly obese patients requiring ECT has been increasing worldwide.
