Mathematics Education in Zoo Settings: Practical Applications and Evidence-Based Approaches

This chapter explores how zoological settings can be used as vibrant platforms for learning mathematics through an in-depth analysis of how zoos can offer real-life mathematics experiences while improving student engagement and motivation. Drawing on constructivist learning theory and situated cognition frameworks, we examine how real-world contexts in zoos can support meaningful mathematics learning through concrete applications and experiential opportunities through authentic problem-solving scenarios. Paying special attention to the role of educators and curriculum design in how best to maximize the educational potential of zoo-based mathematics activities we aim to show how a thoughtful integration of mathematical content with zoological contexts can create powerful learning experiences, illustrating real-world relevance of mathematical concepts. We then introduce four specially designed zoo-based mathematics activities, hoping to provide practical insights into implementing effective mathematical learning experiences in zoological settings. We also identify several key challenges and considerations involved in implementing zoo-based mathematics education, including logistic constraints, issues of alignment with formal curriculum imperatives, and specialized professional development needs for educators. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of promising directions of future research and practice for zoo-based mathematics education, stressing a need for further empirical studies, along with elaboration of sustainable partnerships between educational institutions and zoos.
