Non-Digital Games as Contexts for Out-of-School Learning
摘要
This chapter explores the role of (non-digital) games in out-of-school learning environments, with a particular focus on their applications to mathematics education. In particular, we examine non-digital games in terms of their benefits, their characteristics, their alignment with educational theories, and their design principles within the context of out-of-school education. The literature suggests that these games foster a positive attitude toward mathematics and enhance cognitive development, especially when they prioritize mathematical skills and actively engage students in the learning process. In this regard, we argue that non-digital games align with the principles of the constructivist approach to education. Following this theoretical discussion, we introduce a handful of traditional games from Turkish culture and suggest ways these can be used as contexts for out-of-school learning of mathematics. In the final section, we describe a modified version of a traditional game, incorporating mathematical elements to enhance its educational value in an out-of-school setting.
