This chapter introduces a post-unit thinking pedagogy for Second/Foreign language education I call “neo-immersion,” in which an individual learns one or more person’s idiolect (i.e., someone’s specific way of speaking) rather than learning the standard language. This is a way to avoid the unit thinking of language, which is usually perpetuated by language education that centers on inculcating the standard language to students. Standard language is usually viewed as having a grammar system and vocabularies with stable meanings, based on unit thinking. This chapter situates neo-immersion to various kinds of immersion—during study abroad, classroom teaching, minority language revitalization in communities, and the Master-Apprentice Language Learning Program to revitalize indigenous languages—and also traces its theoretical frameworks.

摘要
