This chapter contrasts pluralism against the concepts of diversity and tolerance, foregrounding its active engagement across differences, which is necessary for a thriving democracy. Distinguishing between pluralism and relativism, it highlights the need to balance conflicting values within a “human horizon.” Epistemic pluralism recognizes multiple valid knowledge sources beyond rational thought. This chapter points to techniques that promote the learning of pluralism through active engagement across difference and create intersubjectivity. It concludes by emphasizing the necessity to actively engage diverse viewpoints. A robust democracy requires valuing co-creation and rejecting isolation within echo chambers.
