Rivers of People
摘要
This Chapter Rivers of people shows how the shapeShape of an inhabited area affects the accessAccess of people on that area, and their performance, and how the ‘consensus’ area shapeShape is born. People can move in two ways, slower (on an area, walkingWalk, Walking), and faster (on a streetStreet, riding). The airportAirport, cityCity block, floorFloor plans in buildingsBuilding and airplanesAirplane, aislesAisle and shelves in libraries, stores, and data centers, are ‘rivers of peopleRivers of people’, elemental examples of the universal designDesign of human movementMovement (bodies, artifactsArtifacts, ideasIdea, informationInformation, societySociety). Nearly the same performance as the perfect shapeShape is offered by the diversityDiversity of imperfectImperfect, Imperfection shapesShape. Diverse designsDesign and designers are attracted by one good ideaIdea (the perfect designDesign) that came from one individualIndividual. A working group emerges only after one original ideaOriginal idea from one individualIndividual. The collectiveCollective is born of the ideaIdea. If qualified and industrious, the group is busy creating a projectProject, based on an original ideaOriginal idea. Sadly, many people in academiaAcademia and governmentGovernment fundingFunding agenciesAgency do not grasp the monumental difference between projectProject and ideaIdea. They proceed believing that the bigger sizeSize (the collectiveCollective) is the generator of better ideasIdea.
