This chapter traces the sub-themes of this book and examines the regional and global background behind the formation of the Arab League and its structural ability to mandate peace operations on behalf of members; the significance of the Arab League Security Force as the first post-World War II preventive deployment peacekeeping mission and the first regional organization mandated peacekeeping operation; and what lessons and legacies can be learned from the deployment of the Arab League Security Force in 1961.
