Health Benefits of Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Diseases
摘要
Carotenoids are pigmented compounds abundantly found in plants and algae. They act as powerful antioxidants that have been linked to various health benefits including protection of the eyes from light exposure, oxidative and inflammatory stress which are key factors in the pathogenesis of macular diseases. However, the benefits are conflicting and not well linked, with excessive intake of some carotenoids associated with health risks. This chapter will summarise the sources of carotenoids and assess their benefits from evidence-based healthcare to provide consumers with comprehensive information and guide individuals to make informed decisions as a vital tool for carotenoid supplementation in the modern digital era.
