This change in the extracellular matrix reduces the pliability of the vocal fold and increases its stiffness. Risk factors for fibrosis and/or scar formation following microlaryngeal surgery are older age (above 50 years), duration of hoarseness of more than 6 months, and/or a lesion attached to the vocal ligament [2, 3].
