Vocal fold mucus retention cysts are benign lesions of the vocal folds that arise from obstruction of the excretory duct of mucus glands. They are a rare cause of hoarseness in adults and children. Affected patients present with a change in voice quality, alteration in pitch, and voice fatigue. Singers may complain of volume disturbance, difficulty transitioning between registers, contracted vocal range, and loss of the high notes [1, 2]. On laryngeal examination, vocal fold mucus retention cysts appear as submucosal yellowish lesions that vary in size. A reactive lesion on the contralateral vocal fold may be seen. Stroboscopy shows asymmetry in vocal fold vibration, with a decrease or absence of mucosal waves at the site of the lesion. Incomplete closure of the vocal folds during phonation may be observed if the lesion is at the free edge of the vocal fold [3, 4].
