Reinke’s edema is a benign disease of the vocal folds commonly encountered in women with a history of smoking. It is characterized by the excess deposition of gelatinous material in the Reinke’s space. Other terms frequently used to describe this condition include polypoid corditis, polypoid laryngitis, and polypoid degeneration of the vocal folds [1]. The main etiology of Reinke’s edema is smoking. Smoking instigates a change in the lamina propria’s extracellular matrix, leading to alterations in its layered structure. Mucosal changes may also occur, ranging from hyperplasia and dysplasia to carcinoma. In a histologic study of 125 patients with bilateral vocal fold Reinke’s edema, Marcotullio et al. reported a correlation between the duration of smoking, daily cigarette consumption, and the degree of dysplasia [2].
