Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications commonly prescribed for the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. They act by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators, leading to a decrease in vascular permeability and cellular infiltrates [1–3]. Both long-term and short-term treatment regimens are effective in treating acute and chronic laryngeal inflammatory disorders, thus improving phonatory, swallowing, and airway symptoms. Different synthetic steroids are available on the market, with the most common being prednisone, methylprednisolone, and hydrocortisone (Table 1.1). A major limitation to the use of systemic steroids is their impact on various systems in the body, resulting in an array of undesirable side effects. These include disruptions in glucose and lipid metabolism, osteoporosis, cardiovascular complications, weakened immune function, and delays in wound healing, among many others [4].
