Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming how we work, learn, and understand the world. This chapter examines the rise of GenAI through a geographical lens. We begin by explaining what GenAI is and why it has proliferated so quickly. We then explore its societal impacts, from changes in professional practice to concerns about bias, misinformation, and environmental costs. A significant focus is placed on education: how GenAI is influencing geographical learning, the urgency of GenAI literacy, and the need for critical spatial thinking. Along the way, we introduce the concept of vibe writing to describe a new way of writing in collaboration with GenAI, where the writer steers the process rather than crafting every sentence. We also discuss practical applications of GenAI in geography and spatial education, alongside the ethical imperatives of human oversight (“human-in-the-loop”). Throughout, we highlight the balance between opportunity and responsibility—illustrating how geographers and educators can harness GenAI for open, inclusive, and critical engagement with the world. The chapter concludes with reflections on the future of AI in geography, emphasizing that while GenAI is here to stay, human judgment and values remain paramount in shaping its role in society.

摘要
