The Tangible and Intangible Elements of the Luxury Yacht Industry
摘要
The chapter discusses tangible and intangible elements of the industry addressing the issues of value proposition for employers and staff members. It highlights that value proposition is not simply about the question of financial compensation packages. The discussion focusses on ‘the ideal candidate’ for working in the industry; traits, skills and personal characteristics of a good crew; crew communication and professional interactions; the role of education and training; challenges of living and working on a yacht; and crew recruitment. The chapter suggests that, despite the superyacht industry’s rapid growth in complexity, size, and capability in recent years, human aspects such as training, structure onboard, and leadership have not kept up at the same pace. Additionally, the chapter suggests a big shift is needed towards a better understanding of the importance of crew and their efforts to deliver the experience that luxury guests seek. The discussion is based on the author’s own professional observations during his service in the industry.
