The Impact of Avatar Visual Realism on the User Experience in a Psychological Assistance Application

The present study examines the way in which the avatar visual presentation influences the user experience in a psychological assistance application. Four images different by their degree of realism were subjected to a comparative analysis in pairs, and three of these images were further included in the main experiment according to the findings of the pilot study. The main experiment, with 216 participants divided into two groups consisting of 116 and 100 people, demonstrated that users tend to feel more comfortable while interacting with more realistic avatars. The experiment results were evidenced by higher levels of trust and satisfaction.
