The Role of Digital Resources in English Medium Instruction: How AI Supports Subject Teachers

The use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) through the world has grown substantially to meet students’ professional and academic growth. This latter is accompanied by its wide use in different domains, including educational instruction, especially in the era of technological advancement as such Artificial Intelligence (AI). Notwithstanding the usefulness of AI in mitigating the teaching and learning of foreign language, research on how AI may help subject teachers is limited. Therefore, this paper provides an overview of the potential benefits and challenges associated with the integration of AI tools in EMI pedagogy especially in supporting subject teachers delivering courses in EMI. On one hand, data were gathered through reviewing the literature of recent studies on the use of AI in education; on the other hand, AI based generated data were qualitatively compared to authentic data for coherence and plausibility. After reviewing studies illustrating AI-driven language support for teaching, findings revealed that although the use of AI and online tools proved to be useful to a large extent in education, there was a lack of focus on implementing AI and online tools to support subject teachers in the EMI context and improving teaching methodologies through them, especially in regard to subject knowledge, which appears to be a discarded area. In parallel, the comparison revealed that AI generated terms are to a large extent reliable and thus could be used in EMI context. Hence, this paper suggests addressing the issue for the sake of helping subject teachers thrive in their use of English within their respective domains.
