Developing Your Communication Skills
摘要
Leaders must develop essential communication skills, which include articulation of a compelling vision, mastering negotiation tactics, and adeptly managing feedback and difficult conversations. In addition, leaders act as mentors and sponsors of team members and peers, and these roles require unique communication skills to support their career trajectory. This chapter will guide you to consider the intent of your communication with specific attention to who you are communicating with, and which method of communication is most appropriate for your specific goals as a leader. Communicating with a team of 20 in a large meeting requires a very different communication style than a one-on-one conversation, and you need to be able to recognize and plan for diverse communication, especially when communication is unplanned and spontaneous. Likewise, your communication may be received very differently by an early career faculty member who is new to your team than it would be received by someone senior to you who has known you for many years. In this chapter, we will discuss these nuances and encourage you to consider them as you develop your own communication skills as a leader. We will discuss basic principles of effective communication for leaders, encouraging you to develop relationship-centered communication that is grounded in appreciative inquiry, but that ultimately imparts praise, promotes productive cognitive discourse, and creates a culture of trust and transparency within your team. Different modes of verbal and written communication will be discussed, and we will cover basic communication skills such as meeting management and negotiation strategies. We will also highlight several barriers to effective communication that can derail otherwise successful and highly competent leaders. The content in this chapter should help to guide your leadership journey and promote self-awareness of how you use your verbal and written words to drive meaningful interactions amongst diverse individuals who work in your macro-organization and microenvironments. It is our goal to empower you as a leader to navigate complex communication dynamics with confidence and efficacy.
